Foster Homes for Service Dogs

Wilderwood Service Dogs is looking for responsible dog lovers to foster a puppy from ages 6 weeks to 1 year.

Foster Handbook

Your commitment would include the following:

  • Raise puppy as a mainly-indoor dog.
  • Give them lots of love and attention and socialize them in your community.
  • Attend a twice-monthly Wilderwood puppy class.
  • Provide dog food at a cost of $30/mo. This can be supplemented for low income or student fosters.
  • Watch them graduate to service dog and be proud of your contribution to Wilderwood and a child in need.

What does puppy fostering look like?

Being a foster may be hard to imagine when you think about how it will look in your house, with your family and with your pets. It’s important to remember that the puppies coming into your home are very young, have limited social skills (other than being wiggly and excited) and need to learn the routine and rules of your family to feel safe and comfortable. They will be taking the obedience journey with you and at such a young age, will crave the structure and routine that only you can provide. They are not perfect, but with your help, we know they can, one day, be stellar service dogs because you have helped them become confident, smart and loving.
